GI Tools is a 5-year MRC Programme Grant aiming to identify new tools to measure intestinal function in children suffering from acute malnutrition. Current tools to study gut function are limited, technically challenging, expensive and don't provide insight into multiple domains of gut function. GI Tools is a consortium of scientists from Queen Mary University of London, Imperial College London, University of Glasgow and the Tropical Gastroenterology and Nutrition Unit (TROPGAN) in Zambia. The project has developed and adopted highly innovative tools including labelled amino acids, transcutaneous sensing of fluorescent probes from the gut and point-of-care microbiome sequencing to gain a deeper insight into intestinal function in adults and children suffering from malnutrition.
