About Ruairi

Ruairi is a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Microbiome Science in the Blizard Institute, Queen Mary University of London where his research explores host and nutrient interactions with the developing gut microbiota in both basic and clinical research. Prior to his current appointment he conducted research at various institutions around the world:


  • 2008-2012: B.Sc Human Nutrition from University College Dublin
  • 2012-2016: Ph.D Microbiology from University College Cork
  • 2015-2016: Visiting PhD researcher (Fulbright Scholar) at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School
  • 2017-2022: Postdoctoral Research Fellow (Wellcome Trust Fellowship) at Queen Mary University of London
  • 2018-2020: Visiting postdoctoral researcher at University of British Columbia
  • 2022-2024: Postdoctoral Research Fellow (Marie Skłodowska-Curie Awards - Individual Fellowship) at Institut Pasteur


Ruairi has been awarded >£8 million in research funding as a principal- and co-investigator for a variety of international research projects investigating host-microbiome interactions in pregnancy and early life. He is also an experience science communicator and regularly communicated the science of the microbiome on podcasts, public talks, radio and television.
